Although many patients are familiar with minigrafts and micrografts, these have many disadvantages. For instance, no more than 50% of natural density can be achieved with hair grafts. Although a feathered hairline can be achieved, the remaining scalp is often embarrassingly thin. The limited quantity of donor hair and progressive loss of scalp hair often leaves patients with problems years later. Scalp miniflaps, anterior advancements, and scalp lifting provide a way to maintain natural density and a natural configuration. These techniques have been developed over the past 25 years and some hair surgeons are capable of performing these procedures but many are not. Dr. Burres has developed the miniflap and advancement alternatives to circumvent the problems of micrografting. It is much easier to remove bald skin than to make it look like normal hair bearing skin. Often, only one or two brief and inexpensive procedures are needed.
